VX Global (FZE) helps UAE residents understand European work permit options and prepare their applications, from our client office at Sahara Healthcare City, Al Nahda 1, Sharjah. Each country sets its own rules, and every permit and visa decision is made by that country’s government authorities.
How European work permits work
Most European countries issue work permits for a specific job with a specific employer. In most cases you need a genuine job offer before a permit can be granted, and the employer often starts the process. After the permit is approved, you usually apply for a national long-stay work visa at the country’s embassy or visa centre.
Some countries also offer routes where you can enter to look for work first, such as Germany’s Opportunity Card. Requirements, fees and processing times change often, so we always check the current rules on official government websites before you apply.
Popular European work permit destinations
Poland
For most roles, the Polish employer applies for a work permit (commonly type A) at the regional Voivodeship Office. The employer may first need to show that the position could not be filled locally. Once the permit is issued, the employee applies for a national visa to travel and work in Poland.
Malta
Malta uses a Single Permit that combines the right to live and work for one employer. The employer and employee apply together through Identità, the government agency that handles residence permits. First-time applicants must complete a pre-departure course. Official Single Permit information.
Germany
Germany has two main routes for skilled workers:
- Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte): lets you stay in Germany for up to one year to look for work. You qualify either with a fully recognised qualification or through a points system, and you must show you can support yourself. Part-time work of up to 20 hours a week is allowed while you search.
- EU Blue Card: for people with a recognised degree and a qualifying job offer that meets a minimum salary level.
See Make it in Germany, the German government’s official portal, for current requirements.
Ireland
Ireland’s Critical Skills Employment Permit is for in-demand occupations such as ICT and engineering. It requires a job offer of at least two years and a minimum salary. Official Irish government information.
